Mood debuffs will be rampant as they dig due to the ugly environment, temperature, and darkness. To make a mountain base work you need one, preferably two very skilled miners, at least one level ten and a level 6 as well if you're going for two. If you do not handle infestations properly they will spiral out of control.Īsides from infestations, the other problems are mostly in the early game. Usually people have an 'infestation room' deep in the mountain with rough floors and ideal temperature, so the infestations will trigger there in a place they can easily deal with them. The only way to entirely stop infestations is to reduce the temperature to -17C or lower. To try and stop infestation you should thoroughly light the base and make sure there is no rough stone. However, infestations prefer to trigger in darkness, near rough stone floors or walls, and at the deepest point in the mountain. Infestations are triggered any time there is a mountain tile over an empty spot (IE no wall or blocking structure such as a Paste Dispenser) in an enclosed space. Since the Storyteller will find that you're in a mountain base, infestations will trigger. You'll needless to say be able to easily funnel raids with a killbox, turning most foot raids into a laughing stock as you can easily make your killbox as big as you need, and leave no other points for raiders to get in if you play the AI right.Ĭons: The most breaking flaw of Mountain Bases: Infestations. Cooling becomes very easy due to the native temperature quickly becoming cold as you enter the mountain. The ability to smooth floors and/or walls lets you save material on construction projects that would be a lot more expensive otherwise. It makes expansion easy to plan out and direct, and you'll frequently find valuables buried in the stone while you're digging. On the same subject, it makes a siege less effective due to the mortars not being able to hit deep into the mountain. Pros: High level of security, you can and should consolidate to a single entrance with the optional inclusion of one sallyport or escape path so you can get your pawns out if under attack.
RIMWORLD BASE MODS
I'm considering the base game in this for the most part, so any mods that change your experience and can make any of these strengths or weaknesses different obviously should be taken into consideration. The reason roots down to logistics, how the AI chooses to function, and the random events that the game throws at you. Generally speaking, the meta-base is a superstructure. I’m currently working on more guides for common questions like What is Considered Tattered for clothing. The best base is up to you and your playstyle as each has their own ups and downs. I hope this guide answers your question on why your room is outdoors.

If you have any other RimWorld questions for me, feel free to ask below. Therefore, while you don’t need to build a roof for a mountain base, you still need stability. When placing a Column, it shows the range that it provides stability for. This is why it’s useful to take advantage of Columns under the Structure tab. So be careful of any potential stability issues. You need to worry about the same thing happening if you build into a hill as well.
That’s one of a couple of reasons that building a base into a mountain is dangerous.
And if that roof collapses, it has the potential to one-hit any colonist beneath it. Mountains have a thick roof that can’t be removed aside from collapsing. But, they work slightly differently both for and against you. The conditions are still the same for when you’re building a room into a mountain or hill. Columns are huge for supporting roofs so they don’t collapse on your colony.
